HOW TO OBTAIN HANDICAPPED PLATES & PLACARD / PARKING SPOT

  • HOW DO I OBTAIN A HANDICAPPED/ DISABILITY PLACARD OR LICENSE PLATES ?

Handicapped license plates & placards are issued by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.   The application and instruction checklist can be obtained on the MVC website at: NJ MVC APPLICATION FOR DISABILITY PLATES & PLACARDS ; by visiting your nearest Motor Vehicle Commission facility; or by calling the Motor Vehicle Commission at 609-292-6500 and requesting that they be mailed to you.

  • I AM GETTING SURGERY – CAN I GET A TEMPORARY HANDICAP PLACARD ?

Temporary Handicapped Placards can be issued by the Chief of Police for short-term mobility impairments such as a surgery.  These placards are not to be issued for a person with permanent disability while waiting for their handicapped placard or plates.    Written medical certification from a qualified practitioner is required.  The application is available at the North Wildwood Police Department or online at: NJ MVC APPLICATION FOR A TEMPORARY HC PLACARD    Upon completing the application, including obtaining your Physician’s signature and prescription, the application may be brought to North Wildwood Police Department during normal business hours (M-F 9am-4pm) with a copy of your driver’s license, vehicle registration, proof of vehicle insurance, and a check or money order in the amount of $4 made payable to NJ MVC.   If approved, you will be immediately issued the temporary placard at that visit.  Temporary Placards are valid for six months, and are renewable once at the discretion of the issuing authority.   A handicapped parking spot in front of your residence cannot be installed for a temporary disability placard.

  • HOW DO I APPLY FOR A DESIGNATED HANDICAPPED PARKING SPOT ON FRONT OF MY RESIDENCE  ?

Residents who have previously obtained handicapped privileges (permanent HC plate of Placard) may apply to have a designated handicapped parking space placed in front of their local residence.  PLEASE NOTE: If you have off street parking, that is considered your HC parking spot in the City of North Wildwood and cannot be installed for visitors or non-residents.  If you do not have off street parking, you can obtain the application in the front lobby of the Police Department or may download it NW HC PARKING SPOT APPLICATION.  In addition to the completed application, you must submit copies of your vehicle registration, driver’s license, insurance card as well as your handicapped registration and/or placard.  If you do not have access to a copy machine, feel free to stop by the Police Department during normal business hours and copies can be made for you.  If you are renting you must also enclose a copy of your lease and the phone number for your landlord in order for us to confirm their permission to install the space in front of their property.

Once the Chief of Police approves or denies your application, you will be sent a letter or email advising you of their decision.  If approved the signage installed will have your disabled license plate or placard number and the parking spot is designated for your personal use ONLY.  No other person, including other handicapped persons/vehicles, can park in it.  Since numerous people move or change status during the year, each spring you will be contacted to verify that you still reside at the residence and still require the HC parking spot.

  • ARE PARKING METERS FREE FOR VEHICLES WITH HANDICAPPED PRIVLIDGES?

The City of North Wildwood follows the State of New Jersey law which states: When parking at a metered space, a driver with a disability placard/license plate must put the appropriate amount of money in the meter.   If the vehicle will occupy the space for more than the maximum amount of time allotted on the meter, the driver must fill the meter to the maximum amount allowed. This will permit the vehicle to occupy the space for up to 24 hours without having to come back and refill the meter.  The vehicle is required to vacate the space after 24 hours.

Additional information on Disable Parking can be obtained at: NEW JERSEY GUIDE TO ACCESSIBLE PARKING
